Well the opportunity came up (at the right price), so I grabbed it while not knowing anything about 3D printers other than the ITAT recent zoom sessions.  And being told quite a few times that Prusa ones just work and you get a great factory back up and online community help.  So I am now the proud owner of a Prusa mk3S 3D printer plus £200 of new spares like a hot end nozzle and 3 new steel bases, a new fan and a Sunlu 3D pen so the rest of the year will be spent trying to get the Stepcraft mill and the Prusa printer hooked up and talking to my PC and then producing things.  I feel a bit like the rabbit in the headlights at the moment.

Hi John,

You've probably chosen the best printer to as near as possible guarantee good results out of the box.

I'm not an expert but from my limited experience the most critical factors are:

Make sure your bed is level (this should be easy on the prusa)

Make sure your z offset is correct (should be set in the factory)

Pay attention to bed and hot end temperatures as recommended by the filament manufacturer and (prusa if using a prusa supplied bed)

Keep your filament dry (PLA and other filaments readily adsorb water which creates bubbles of steam in the hot end)

Avoid printing in cold and draughty rooms

If you get all of these correct you should achieve good bed adhesion with minimal warping and you will be well on the road to achieving reliable 3D prints.

Any problems, there are far more experienced people than me on this forum who will help.

Good luck and happy printing,

Robert

My advice is to just follow the Prusa guide / instructions regarding setting the printer up and you won't go far wrong.

Thanks Robert & Ron, I've already used the factory Prusa chat helpline and downloaded the manuals and the service manual so a bit of insomniac reading there.  Have printed my first test piece today and hey-ho it works, so really pleased.  Got to wrestle with Fusion 360 to draw a clamping bracket for my phone and ground station to attach them to my Tx ready for a GPS glider training session next weekend.

Where do you guys buy Isopropyl Alcohol for cleaning the steel base sheet?  Prusa say not to use acetone (which I already have).
