My current and slow build of a Phil Greeno Philibuster from outerzone plans and converted to electric. Another with some 3D printed parts

Philibuster Plan

The wrap round plastic sheet for the canopy was not working too well

I 3D drew a canopy in Fusion 360

So I mocked out a rough 3D print to check dimensions

then when i seemed to be ok 3d printed a plug, which was then sanded smooth and painted with easykote

I made a littel vacuum former with more 3D printed bits

the canopy came out ok not perfect but happy with my first one

now up to the prep prior to spraying. I have been using rattle can primer filler from Halfords

looking at spraying oracolor or car 2K paint

What are you going to cover the model with? Tissue or glass cloth with epoxy.

The secret in spraying is getting a nice smooth base to work with, does not matter much what it is but it must be smooth if you want a light weight paint job.

What type of paint did you plan to use?

@pylonuk Hi, It is glass cloth with epoxy. I am at the primer and 400 grit stage. Looking at Oracolor epoxy or some car 2K epoxy. I have not really tried other paints but I am hoping the mini gun pictured above with work ok

@jono We use much more inferior spraying equipment to that which you show, mostly we use Badger 250's they are the workhorse of spraying for me.

There is a superb primer that you can get in the car spray supply places, it is called Kapci, you can buy it on Ebay, it is superb, sands easy and is cheapish.

Then use automotive base coats, these are single part and just need thinning, the range of colours is huge then finally clear coat, the car 2K clear coats are good but there is a semi marine one called Awlcraft 2000 which is absolutely superb.

Are you happy with the whole process? I have only ever covered/finished 2 models with film, so I have a little form on spray painting.

@pylonuk thanks I will look out the primer it sounds interesting. So far I have used Halfords white primer on it mainly as a guide to see the lumps and bumps that still need filling. A little way to go before I am ready to spray. Not massively confident I have done one or two using badger 150, 250 and 350 to varying degrees of success

I painted this last summer with a 150 I don't think I had the settings quite right but looks ok(ish)

The 350 is a bit of a nothing, the 150's are very good but a little too fine for primer. Kapci is light years better than those Halfords rattle can primers, I mean like 4 times better.

Remember to use the abrasive paper on a block and dont use papers that are too fine, 180 to 240 is good for tidying up the glass cloth and epoxy.

No problem spraying primer with a 250, the good thing with a 250 is that it does not shift a lot of air so you don't disturb dust very much.

If you want a real laugh take a look at this spraying video.
